You Lost Me at ‘Call to Book’

How a poor online experience turns guests away before they ever arrive

When researching campgrounds we go through a process of choosing where to stay. We look at reviews, pictures and the website but the #1 thing that stops us in our tracks and makes us move on are the words:

“Call to reserve.”

For most guests—especially RVers on the road—that’s an instant dealbreaker.

We’ve stayed at hundreds of parks across the country. And while some are fantastic in person, many lose us long before we even get there… because of their online experience.

First Impressions Happen Online (Not at the Gate)

Before a guest ever sees your entrance, they’ve already seen your:

  • Website
  • Photos
  • Booking flow
  • Google reviews
  • Mobile responsiveness
  •

And if any of those steps are clunky, unclear, or outdated—you’ve already lost the booking.

We scroll fast. If we can’t see availability and pricing quickly, we move on. There are too many other options.

What Instantly Turns Guests Away

Here’s a quick list of things that make us (and other campers we know) bail on a reservation:

     ❌ No online booking
❌ Outdated website design or broken links
❌ Stock photos or the same image repeated across all sites
❌ Poor mobile usability (text cut off, hard to click buttons)
❌ No Google reviews or mostly old ones
❌ Confusing layout with no clear “Book Now” button

We’ve even seen parks where the contact form was the only option. That’s not a reservation—that’s a hassle. And we dont have time for that hassle, so we move on.

Why “Call to Book” Feels Outdated and Frustrating

When your planning your camping trip its not always feasible to call and ask for availability. And by the time we get a response from a form request or voicemail for a reservation we have already booked somewhere else.

Most of your guests are researching and making reservations during the work day or late at night. To step out and call a campground to see if there is availability is another step that your guest has to take to give you business.

Today’s campers want:

  • The ability to see real availability
  • Book from their phone
  • Lock in a site in minutes
  • Receive a confirmation email or text

Even for older guests, the expectation of instant, clear communication is growing fast. A lack of online booking feels like a red flag for the rest of the experience.

How a Better Digital Experience Pays Off

When your online presence is clean and modern, it sends a message:

“We have kept up on our appearance online so you can expect the same when you arrive.”

We’ve booked parks simply because their websites were clear, fast, and mobile-friendly—even if they weren’t the cheapest option.

And with virtual tours or photos of each site? Game changer.

Simple Steps to Improve the Guest Journey Online

If you’re not ready for a full site redesign, here’s where to start:

✅ Add an online booking engine

✅ Make sure your site is mobile-friendly

✅ Use real photos of your sites—not just your pool and camp store

✅ Add reviews or guest quotes on your site

✅ Include clear call-to-action buttons: “Check Availability” or “Book Now” (Don’t bury this! Make it easy to locate on every page)

✅ If you use a map, make it interactive or easy to download

You don’t need flashy design—you just need clarity, speed, and transparency.

Final Thought: Your Website Is Your Front Desk

Guests don’t want to call, wait, or wonder. They want to feel confident in where they’re staying—before they pull in.

If your website is hard to use, your phone line is your only booking method, or your site doesn’t show the actual sites—you’re already behind.

Fixing that can make the difference between being just another park and being the one they return to next year.
